Product Description
After successfully expanding and leading SFF(small form factor) cases and SFX PSU into the DIY (do it yourself) market, SilverStone engineers have continued their push for advancement in these categories by releasing a true upgrade-worthy small form factor power supply, the ST45SF-G. Despite being half the size of a regular ATX power supply, the ST45SF-G can still produce continuous power output of 450W. Its 80 PLUS Gold level efficiency is a great leap from the previous SFX best of 80 PLUS Bronze and the full modular cables is also the first of its kind for this form factor. To enable users to easily take advantage of this excellent SFX power supply, an adapter is included to convert ST45SF-G to mount in any ATX case in addition to ones that fit only SFX. For SFF users and for SilverStone, the ST45SF-G is more than just an upgrade, it is an important milestone for DIY desktop computer.

That being said, I turned to this PSU because it was the only one that was modular, 80 Plus Gold, and enough wattage (Coming from an AX750 in my Corsair 650D, I didn't want to compromise).
I was worried that Amazon would ship me one of the older v1.0 units and I'd get the annoying fan noise. However, I ordered mine on 10/20/2013, and I got the v2.0. This made me happy to know I got the most recent and silent one. I probably would have returned a v1.0 had Amazon sent me one.
This thing is dead silent. My Corsair H50 pump drowns out the noise of the fan. I can only hear it if I put my ear right up to the back of the PSU. People will say "you'll use all the cables anyway, so get the non-modular, hur hur hur!!!" However, if you're really into this stuff, you'll get the 80 Plus GOLD and Silverstone's short cable kit (P/N: PP05) and shorten and cut the cables yourself to save space. That way, if you screw it up, you can just replace the cables. Plus, I've avoided using one of the cables, so I don't have to tuck cables anywhere.
I bought it for those two reasons over the non-modular. That, and it was just as expensive as getting the SG05 + non-modular PSU together. Instead, I got the SG05 Lite and this PSU.
One negative is that the cables aren't all that flexible, but I'm in the process of cutting them down to fit anyway. Another negative is that it's difficult to use the 3.5" bay in the SG05 with the modular cables because of the connectors sticking out the front butt up against the drive cage. I remedied that by getting rid of the drive cage and using a 2.5" drive for storage at the bottom.
However, it IS possible to use the 3.5"/2.5" ODD cage WITH this PSU. You just have to install your drives first and then the PSU by feeding your cables into the case (not connecting them yet) and then tilting it to meet the bracket at the back, and then slowly tilting horizontally into position with the cables making a sharp downward turn.
UPDATE:
It's 8/3/14, and I've been using the PSU for almost a year. NO issues whatsoever. It's powering an Asus Z87i-Deluxe, i5-4670k (overclocked to 4.2Ghz), 240GB SSD, 1TB notebook hard drive, Corsair H55, and GTX670 Mini.
I bought it new July 23, 2016.
It started dying in April 2021.
Now it shuts off without warning, typically after a few minutes. It has *never* been under heavy load or abused in any way -- I was using it in a small ITX server with I3 CPU, fully assembled the entire server ran less than 30watts while booted according to the Kill-A-Watt meter. The same system runs fine with another p/s, so you can judge for yourself where the fault is.
I don't expect computer stuff (especially with heat, current, and moving parts i.e. fans) to last forever, but I do expect quality expensive components (I paid $90-100 for it) to comfortably outlive the warranty. I have other p/s, disk drives, etc. quite older than this p/s still running fine.
Pretty disappointed. I've liked SilverStone cases for years, this was my first p/s from them, and I believe it'll be the last.
This thing is small, less than half the volume of a standard (short) ATX unit. Used in a tight ATX case it leaves extra room for other components, cables, and airflow. It will also fit in a 2U high case.
It provides plenty of power for anything you would want to put in a compact case, and the critical 12V output is a single rail rated for the full 450 Watts.
At first glance the quality looks good. Time will tell.
Notes:
As suits a supply for small cases the output connectors are limited: 1 motherboard, 1 CPU, 1 PCIe, and 3 SATA/Molex. You might need splitter extension cables for builds with a lot of components.
The cable lengths are right for small cases. Longer cables are available.
The small size leaves no room for a mechanical power switch and very little clearance between the internals and the case. Be prepared to look for short (1/8") mounting screws.
The box included an unusually comprehensive data sheet, as well as a useless generic installation booklet in an amazing number of languages.
Minor quibbles:
The aforementioned short mounting screws could have been included.
The ATX adapter plate is a very thin steel stamping, for a dollar more they could have supplied a classier thick aluminum plate.
The SATA power cables use 90 degree connectors which are between difficult and impossible to install on closely spaced drives. This can be remedied by purchasing splitter cables with 180 degree connectors, or if you have room by using a mobile rack with a single power connector for multiple bays.
Overall:
An excellent choice for small to medium size builds. It's on the expensive side, but smaller and cheaper than 80 Plus Platinum supplies which are probably no more efficient at light loads. It's also more flexible than external bricks with DC-DC converters.
The modular sockets stick out from the back of the casing and block the FT03 mini's HD bays. So you'll only be able to fit 1 HD instead of 3.
Other than that, it seems to work great at providing power to a mini itx board with an i7 3770 and an NVidia 560 gpu.
